This woman plays a large role in the most famous love story, and yet so little is known about her--her name is mentioned only once in the play.
The story of Romeo & Juliet's tragic romance is told from the wet-nurse's POV and offers a different (and more tragic) perspective from the over- romanticized tellings from the various movies. . Treat yourself to this new and richly imagined version of literature's most cherished and tragic love story. The story is told from the point of view of Juliet's nurse, Angelica, beginning with the rather odd childbirth and subsequent death of her infant girl. I loved it.Lois Leveen’s richly detailed, fascinating novel offers a wholly original and intriguing take on one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays through the imagined life of Juliet’s faithful nurse, whose secret loves and tragedies rival the young lovers’ own. There may be a few occasions when the reader experiences a twinge of skepticism that any gothic nursemaid – no matter how wise – could articulate her insights with such gorgeously rendered acuity.
Clever, fast-paced, well-researched and beautifully written. The premise of hearing a familiar story from another perspective is very appealing, which is why I looked forward to Juliet's Nurse. Then, permanently, when he walked into the desert outside Bishop, California, and never returned. It spans the days from Angelica's engagement with House Cappeletti as wet nurse to their newborn child Juliet. "A stunning success...Leveen has clearly captured the spirit of the age (historically speaking)...creating a new lens by which to experience the time-tested love story. Maybe she sees in Juliet what she wants to see since she has lost all of her children This is a well-written and enjoyable companion to the Shakespeare play with an imaginative but plausible backstory. I was not sure what to expect, but I can say this book is definitely a modern-day classic.I first read the story of "Romeo and Juliet" when I was in junior high, and I studied it in depth in high school. Maybe everyone in Verona was completely fooled by the double death (actually a triple death, somehow I’d forgotten that Paris ends up dead beside the lovers in the tomb) and while they’re building a monument and ending the family rivalry, really Romeo and Juliet (and the faithful nurse, of course) escaped successfully to some small Italian village to live out their lives safely and happily!?!? Juliet’s Nurse is NOT just a retelling of Romeo and Juliet from the perspective of a side character from Shakespeare’s play. An action-packed adventure, an epic love story, a marvelously conceived and executed page-turner, Miller’s monumental debut novel has already earned resounding acclaim from some of contemporary fiction’s brightest lights—and fans of Mary Renault, Bernard Cornwell, Steven Pressfield, and Colleen McCullough’s Masters of Rome series will delight in this unforgettable journey back to ancient Greece in the Age of Heroes.Unfortunately, Black Jack Randall is not the man his descendant is, and while trying to escape him, Claire falls into the hands of a gang of Scottish outlaws, and finds herself a Sassenach - an outlander - in danger from both Jacobites and Redcoats.Marooned amid danger, passion and violence, her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. . Nothing. Juliet’s nurse is a pretty interesting character (when you are not jealously listening to the Juliet scenes, that is), and the upcoming novel Juliet’s Nurse by Lois Leveen explores this character’s life.
Who cares, here are some bookblogs I like to read. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.Ella Rubinstein has a husband, three teenage children, and a pleasant home. An enthralling new telling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet — told from the perspective of Juliet's nurse. There is nothing here that brings anything new or informative to the story. This isn’t surprising, given the amount of responsibility she had in caring for Juliet since her birth.
