Businessman allegedly threatened to make another man homelessGet the stories that matter to you sent straight to your inbox with our daily newsletter.A businessman has appeared in private at Perth Sheriff Court, accused of using misleading and coercive tactics in relation to selling caravans.Caravan park owner Cresswell Welch faced four charges, two of them alleged to have involved old age pensioners and to have taken place in Blairgowrie, when he appeared on petition before Sheriff William Wood.Another of the charges alleges that he threatened to make another man homeless, despite knowing his father had recently passed away, if he didn’t buy a caravan from him.Welch, of Seaton View, Seaton Road, Arbroath, made no plea and his case was continued for further inquiries.The first offence is said to have taken place at Marlee Gardens, Blairgowrie, between September 1 and December 23, 2016.Being a trader, Welch is said to have misled 73-year-old John Robertson about the age, value and warranty terms of a caravan which he ultimately agreed to purchase from the accused.A second charge alleges that between October 1, 2017, and May 31, 2018, again at Marlee Gardens, he engaged in an aggressive commercial practice.It is claimed that he “harassed, coerced and placed undue influence” on 70-year-old Anthony Steven to purchase a caravan, other than the one he had ordered - and coerced him to pay for a caravan by making threats and acting in an aggressive manner.A third charge alleges that between April 25 and June 1, 2018, he told John Wadman his caravan was under construction and nearing completion, when it hadn’t actually been started.The charge also claims the accused misled Mr Wadman about the size and age of his caravan.It is finally alleged that on June 1, 2018, at Seaton Estate, Arbroath, he harassed, coerced and placed undue influence on Mr Wadman in order to make him accept a smaller caravan than the one he had paid for by acting in an intimidating manner towards him.Welch is accused of telling the other man he would end up homeless if he didn’t accept Welch’s offer, in the knowledge that Mr Wadman’s father had recently died.Perth Sheriff Court.

A six-times-the-limit Tayside businessman found beside his car after he crashed into a back road ditch has been fined £1,500 for the “staggering” drink-drive count.Ian Hosea was also banned for 23 months after trying to make the two-mile journey to a friend’s house after an afternoon drinking and crashing on a back road north of Dundee.The 38-year-old was found by police just before 10pm on the Bridgefoot to Templeton road on August 14.Depute fiscal Laura McGillvery told Forfar Sheriff Court Hosea was standing beside his black Land Rover Freelander with his dog.He gave a roadside breath reading of 132 microgrammes – six times the legal limit of 22.When arrested for the offence he told police: “I’m sorry.”Hosea, of Craigmill Road, Bridgefoot pled guilty to the offence.The court heard Hosea, who works in the family leisure and tourism business, had been drinking from 3pm to 8pm.Defence solicitor Nick Markowski said: “Given the nature of his business, although this was a Wednesday, it was in effect his Saturday.“He was kept in custody and this has all been a fairly salutary experience for him.“He’s embarrassed, ashamed and it appears to be an isolated aberration.”Sheriff Gregor Murray told Hosea: “By any standards, the reading in your case is staggering.
